Casey v. Santorum

Bob Casey has secured his place as the Democratic Candidate running against Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania. Casey won 85 percent of the vote May 16th, showing broad support for his campaign.

Casey was selected months ago by Democratic leaders in DC who believe he has what it takes to defeat Santorum. On that point, they were right. Casey is already leading Santorum in most polls. The downside, however, is that Casey supports overturning Roe v. Wade.

Sadly, this pushed a more progressive and pro-choice candidate, Barbara Hafer, out of the race. The decision resulted in the National Organization for Women (NOW) speaking out against the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee..

At this point, however, Casey is our one chance to defeat Santorum. This is likely why the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats (CRSD) decided to endorse Casey just days before the primary.

"Bob Casey will be a good senator, above and beyond the fact that he will be an improvement over anti-gay Rick Santorum. Bob Casey supports civil unions, opposes the anti-gay 'marriage amendment' and supports a ban on anti-LGBT job discrimination," said CRSD co-chair Ben Turner.

CRSD co-chair Judy Chambers said, "Our group is largely pro-choice, but there are clear differences between Bob Casey and Santorum. Bob Casey supports emergency contraception and funding for family planning, as well as sex education that goes beyond 'abstinence until marriage' limits that are unrealistic and discriminate against
LGBT and questioning youth."

Best Santorum Site Ever.

In the quest to get Rick Santorum out of the Senate, there are a lot of interesting Santorum websites out there. There is of course, Stop Santorum Now, a coalition website supported by Stonewall Democrats Chapters in Pennsylvania. Then there's Spreading Santorum, which pays homage to the meaning of the word 'santorum' as defined by Dan Savage (not a pretty picture).

But I think I discovered my favorite Santorum site today. Santorum Exposed. There are some pretty entertaining things on this site like This video clip of Tony Soprano agreeing with Senator Sanatorium's position on Gays and Lesbians. You'll also find the site is chock full of contradictory statements from Santorum, questionable ethical and financial dealings, and documentation of his extreme right agenda.

Santorum Supporter Sells Gym To Avoid Protest.

The Liberty City Stonewall Democrats and DFA Group Philly for Change teamed up for a protest at the 12th Street Gym. The Gym, popular among the LGBT Community in Philly, was owned in part by Bob Guzzardi, a financial backer of Rick Santorum.

The protest turned into a celebration, however, when Bob Guzzardi responded by selling his interest in the gym to avoid the planned protests, and a campaign to encourage fair-minded folks to switch to another gym. Liberty City Democratic Club stated on their website "This is an amazing victory for the LGBT community of Philadelphia and for the fight to defeat Santorum at the polls this year!"
